Strawberry Fields Forever" is a song by the English rock band the Beatles. It was released in February 1967 as a double A-side single with "Penny Lane".
Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band’, we take a look back to its recording sessions, during which history was made and the psychedelic rock hits ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’ and ‘Penny Lane’ were created. Originally intended for inclusion on the album, The Beatles instead decided to release the hits as a double a-side single in February 1967. The songs are a collection of the Fab Four’s childhood memories and a nostalgic look back to their past, growing up in their hometown of Liverpool. Following the creation of these Lennon-McCartney hits came the UK release of perhaps their finest single of all, the double a-side ‘Strawberry Fields Forever/Penny Lane’ on 17th February 1967. It climbed to number 2 on the UK charts, breaking the band's four-year run of chart-topping singles, and spent 11 weeks there.
Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields Forever entered the charts on 23 February 1967, and climbed to number two. It was held off by Engelbert Humperdinck’s Release Me, and spent 11 weeks on the charts . PMc: So another question we quite often see is, in hindsight, do you wish ‘Penny Lane’ and ‘Strawberry Fields’ had been included on the album? And if so, where would you have placed them? PM: No, I was happy.
Strawberry Fields Forever was originally intended to appear on the band’s seminal Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album, but was instead released the same year (1967) as a double-A side with Paul McCartney’s Penny Lane. George Martin has publicly stated that taking both Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields Forever off of Sgt. Pepper’s was the biggest mistake of his career. Both songs are named after sites in Liverpool and are steeped in childhood and English nostalgia.
The inclusion of Strawberry Fields Forever would have gone a long way toward rectifying the the problem of too few Lennon contributions on the album. But, the fact remains that those songs weren’t included. Adding insult to injury, as great as those two songs are, even releasing them together on a double A-sided single wasn’t enough to prevent that 45 from being the first Beatles single to fail to reach number one in the UK since their first chart-topper. Strawberry Fields is, in my opinion, the best Beatles song and one of the greatest songs ever written/recorded. Penny Lane, while not in my top tracks, is an instantly likeable and interestingly composed song. The inclusion of both would have made a strong album even stronger (ideally, these tracks could have been on Side 2, which is fairly week, save for A Day in the Life).

It was held off by Engelbert Humperdinck's Release Me, and spent 11 weeks on the charts. The failure to reach the top was because many chart compilers counted the double a-side as two individual releases; it did, in fact, outsell Release Me by nearly two to one. It was pretty bad, wasn't it, that Engelbert Humperdinck stopped Strawberry Fields Forever from getting to number one? But I don't think it was a worry. The only reason that Strawberry Fields Forever and Penny Lane didn't go onto the new album was a feeling that if we issued a single, it shouldn't go onto an album. That was a crazy idea, and I'm afraid I was partly responsible. It's nonsense these days, but in those days it was an aspect that we'd try to give the public value for money.
