Traditional music plays an important part in African identity. But the loss of African musical identity is not only based on musicians' ambition to be current and hip. Traditional music, which often goes back thousands of years, has found many barriers to keep its relevancy in a globalised and tech-driven world. This is owed to the failure of educational institutions across Africa to infuse traditional music in their syllabuses; the blame often falls on the lack of archived, and transcribed, traditional music in some of the most culturally rich parts on the continent
The music on this album comes from a part of East Africa whose musical traditions remain largely unknown to the rest of the world. Particularly fascinating is the manner in which music and medicine are combined in the indigenous practice of witchcraft; music takes on the power of medicine, and medicine becomes associated with the healing sound of drums, interwoven with beautiful threads of melody. DAVID FANSHAWE, 1975. Recorded in Kenya and Tanzania by David Fanshawe Engineering: David.
The South African music scene includes both popular (jive) and folk forms like Zulu isicathamiya singing and harmonic mbaqanga. South Africa has a global music industry. Early records of music in southern Africa indicate a fusion of cultural traditions: African, European and Asian.
