It is the first album delivered by the band since 2010’s self-titled album, Daughters, and an eight-year hiatus. On October 29, 2018, Ipecac Recordings posted a video that features interviews with the band members detailing what was involved to reform the band and release the album. He called You Won’t Get What You Want, the most effectively terrifying album I’ve heard all decade.

Daughters’ past work provided instantaneous, absurdist release, strings of one-minute songs that pummeled and then fled. But at 48 minutes, You Won’t Get What You Want is almost as long as their last two albums combined, four times as long as their spastic tantrum of a debut, Canada Songs. In this more weathered iteration, rage and rancor are fleeting and unsustainable, forms of weakness that are at odds with their monomaniacal vision

With their comeback album Daughters have managed to create something beyond wonderful. To say the least I got what I wanted, and more. AWith their comeback album Daughters have managed to create something beyond wonderful. A musical experience unlike any other, prepare for a dark and wild ride. When the album gets to you, it staysYou Won't Get What You Want is one of the most authentic and deep records I've ever heard in a while. When the album gets to you, it stays inside your head for days. This is one of the most effectively horrific and bizarre experiences I've ever had in an album ever. One of the reasons why Noise Rock is such a great music genre is that in its loudness, the listener gets drowned in the music and its waves of emotion.

But what set Daughters apart was the unnerving nature of their menace - you truly didn’t know what frontman Alexis Marshall might say or do. The band regrouped five years ago and have tweaked their sound slightly; You Won’t Get What You Want is a slow build rather than a shrieking onslaught, but it still has an inherent sense of danger. The band’s most obvious influences (chiefly Jesus Lizard and the Birthday Party) are still present, but they’ve been transmogrified through electronics, tribal drumming and Marshall’s meandering moans

Daughters first album in eight years, ‘You Won’t Get What You Want’, is the most recent addition to this bizarre naming trend. As soon as you hear the first song off Daughters’ latest work, you’re going to know exactly what you’re in for. So if you don’t like it, you had better leave immediately, friendo. The song in question is ‘City Song‘, starting with synthetic drones and sparse, rhythmic drumming; ending with a cacophonous climax of noisy electronics and despairing vocals that repeat The city’s an empty glass over and over. Speaking of those electronics, it’s notable that nothing on this new Daughters album stands out as insanely technical all by itself. Yes, Jon Syverson’s drumming is exceptional, but it works to suit the electronics and the vocals, neither of which are virtuosic by any stretch. But that’s not an issue.
