Emergency – Ward 10 attracted attention for its portrayal of an interracial relationship between surgeon Louise Mahler (played by Joan Hooley) and Doctor Giles Farmer (played by John White), showing the second kiss on television between black and white actors in July 1964, the first such kiss being in a Granada TV play You in Your Small Corner in 1962.

Michael Ward is an American guitarist who has played with the bands School of Fish and The Wallflowers. He has also recorded and performed with John Hiatt and Ben Harper. Currently he plays with Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals. In 1989, Ward co-founded the alternative rock band School of Fish with singer-guitarist Josh Clayton-Felt.

Ward completed both his undergraduate degree and medical school training here at UW. He was one of the first students to be awarded the Darren Bean Emergency Medicine Scholarship. He then moved on to Chicago to complete his residency at the University of Chicago. Upon graduation, he stayed on as faculty at the University of Chicago and returned to Madison in 2017.
