Mike Seeger (August 15, 1933 – August 7, 2009) was an American folk musician and folklorist. He was a distinctive singer and an accomplished musician who played autoharp, banjo, fiddle, dulcimer, guitar, mouth harp, mandolin, dobro, jaw harp, and pan pipes. Seeger, a half-brother of Pete Seeger, produced more than 30 documentary recordings, and performed in more than 40 other recordings. He desired to make known the caretakers of culture that inspired and taught him.

The National Banjo Pickers' Convention, 1970. One of the most fondly remembered folk festivals was the National Banjo Pickers’ Convention. Held annually near Hamilton from 1967 to 1970, these festivals represent perhaps the first big surge of interest in bluegrass music in New Zealand. Three live albums from the Banjo Pickers’ Conventions were released on the Kiwi record label. The festival received international support from American folk legend Pete Seeger in 1968, and in 1969 his half-brother Mike Seeger performed there. The poster above advertises the final Convention in 1970, also the subject of the documentary ‘Keep on the sunny side’. Like many of the posters in Phil Garland’s collection, this Canterbury Folk Festival poster has an agreeably homemade feel. 10th Canterbury Folk Festival at Amberley Domain, 1985.
Banjo players are destined to fall in love with this 26-track CD study of picking in its many patterns. Folklorist and virtuoso Seeger draws on an array of traditional tunes to demonstrate the old-time styles of Roscoe Holcomb, Dock Boggs, Uncle Dave Macon, and other mountain maestros as well as the newfangled (well, we're talking the '40s) Earl Scruggs approach. Mike takes you from the earliest forms of African American banjo styles, to bluegrass, and leaves many stops behind. Perhaps the ultimate would be to get the three video set of instruction Mike has made based on this same reprtoire where he explains how each song is played and gives the history of the many different banjos he played them on and often the history of the players he learned these tunes from.
