Description

Album · 2014 · 7 Songs. The Seeker Azar Lawrence.

Lost Tribes of Lemuria, 07:45. One More Time, 09:21.

Saxophonist Azar Lawrence has been forging his path through music for the past four decades. He has become one of the principal voices of the post-Coltrane age of jazz, a spiritual and musical descendent yet one still forging his own distinct voice and style. Lawrence s new recording The Seeker is an album dedicated to those, like himself, who are on their path and the trailblazers who continue to light their way.

Azar Lawrence (born November 3, 1952) is an American jazz saxophonist, known for his contributions as sideman to McCoy Tyner, Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard, and Woody Shaw. Lawrence was the tenor saxophonist Tyner used following John Coltrane's death. Lawrence released Summer Solstice on Prestige Records in 1975, produced by Orrin Keepnews

Azar Lawrence Quintet Dizzy's Club Coca Cola New York, NY June 26-29, 2014. There ain't no denyin' that jazz is best heard "live. All of these conditions were met at Dizzy's Club Coca Cola when tenor and soprano saxophonist, Azar Lawrence, played four sold out nights at Dizzy's, occasioned by a CD release party for The Seeker (Sunnyside, 2014), recorded live at the Jazz Standard. The gig offered visceral and indisputable evidence of the emotional and spiritual power of live jazz.

Speak The Word ‎(CD, Album).

With improvised music, you get used to seeing a band warm up by degrees. It comes with the aesthetic form, and also with the business model, if it’s a band performing sporadic multiple-night stands. Jazz is full of groups reconvening, recohering, then pacing themselves across a few nights and days. The quintet led by the saxophonist Azar Lawrence, from Los Angeles, is of that form and that model. For the last three years or so, it’s been playing gigs in clubs - often on the East Coast, where all its other members are based - and then everyone scatters and does different things
