Prairie School Freakout is the second (and first full-length) album by Chicago-based band Eleventh Dream Day, originally released on Amoeba Records in 1988. According to the original liner notes, the album "was recorded on a hot pollution alert day during July in Louisville, Kentucky, and was made at a place called Artist Recording Service

IN THE 1980s, Eleventh Dream Day mixed the overdriven power of Neil Young's Crazy Horse with the light-fingered finesse of Television and the iconoclastic energy of the American hardcore-punk scene to arrive at a sound all their own. Prairie School Freakout, their second album, was released 15 years ago, and is one of those largely unknown records that deserves a second chance to find its place at the top of your list of all-time favourite albums. Even its sleeve notes are impossibly romantic: "Recorded on a hot pollution alert day during July 1987 in Louisville, Kentucky.

This is Eleventh Dream Day's best album. It makes grunge and today's doom and gloom crap look wimpy. Good songwriting, crunchy guitar and huge bass. The band made a great leap forward on Prairie School Freakout. The reissue on Thrill Jockey contains the band's other and earlier EP, Wayne, but this only adds two tracks added to the original ten on the LP. Three songs appear in video form on the bonus disc.

Listening to Dream Day guitarist James Elkington - we call him Elk, Sir Jim, sometimes Greenberg’s replacement - in his solo setting is akin to going to see, let’s just come right out and say it, Nick Drake, were Nick still, you know, alive and doing concerts, and wouldn’t that be wonderful. Fresh off his opening stint for the recent US Tweedy tour, on which he also toiled as Jeff’s guitarist, James played an intimate show on Chicago’s north side last night. It was an autumnal Brit folk excursion of tremendous power and virtuosity and not a little humor. Any Prairie School Freakout fans out there? 88. 10.
