Album 3 of the RUSH DISCOGRAPHY Caress of Steel was meant to take the band to new heights, but instead, they flew too close to the sun and found themselves reeling. but placed them back to back, a decision that was harped upon harshly. Overall, not a bad album, but rather middle of the road.

Caress of Steel is the third studio album by Canadian rock band Rush, released in 1975. The album showcases the band's continued evolution to hard progressive rock as opposed to the blues-based hard rock style of the band's first album. Although Rush's previous album Fly by Night dabbled in longer conceptual pieces such as "By-Tor & the Snow Dog", such works were the central focus of Caress of Steel.

Rush are one of the great prog-rock bands, and Caress of Steel is their first real prog album. But despite its importance, it remains the black sheep of their catalog with its meandering instrumentals and shrieked vocals; even the band members feel uncomfortable listening to it decades later. That whole Caress of Steel period is stuck in a strange and funny moment in our history," Lee told Rolling Stone in 2014. I really don't know how that would stand the test of time. The album shows more of Rush's adherence to the hard rock and progressive rock styles of the band's first two albums. Long pieces, pieces broken up into parts, and solo passages of speed and agility are all included

Caress of Steel can often be seen as an album of firsts. It is without a doubt Rush’s first true foray into the realm of progressive rock. It is also their first album to contain a side-long epic and a song longer than 10 minutes. However, it was also their first (and only) commercial failure, leading to the album as a whole being cast aside by both the band and critics. Though songs such as Bastille Day and Lakeside Park are considered classics (the latter was even played during Rush’s farewell tour, R40), the remaining tracks are often seen as too complex or too ambitious
