Violator is the seventh studio album by English electronic music band Depeche Mode. It was released on 19 March 1990 by Mute Records. Preceded by the singles "Personal Jesus" and "Enjoy the Silence" (a top-10 entry in both the United Kingdom and the United States), the album propelled the band into international stardom, and also yielded the singles "Policy of Truth" and "World in My Eyes"

Depeche Mode's Martin Gore says the band was "out partying most nights" while making 1990's 'Violator' in Milan. When synth-pop trailblazers Depeche Mode put out their darkly hued seventh album, Violator, a quarter of a century ago, it was an event. One day after the record came out, a mob of more than 10,000 fans shut down a small section of Los Angeles surrounding a record store.

The two Depeche Mode albums leading up to 1990’s ‘Violator’ – ‘Black Celebration’ and ‘Music for the Masses’ – were just oiling the machine. After toying with mainstream success on 1984’s ‘People Are People,’ a Top 15 hit, Depeche Mode began courting darker themes and underground audiences with their fifth album, 1986’s ‘Black Celebration. By the time ‘Music for the Masses’ followed the next year, the band pretty much was on a path toward world domination. It certainly helped that ‘Violator’ is the biggest and boldest (and best) album they ever made. Its lead single, ‘Personal Jesus,’ preceded the album by six months. In addition to a stomping, sinister beat, the song oozes that special Depeche Mode sauce they’d been slathering on top of all their songs since they traded in their synth-pop dork style for something more crazy, sexy and cool.

Definitely the most non-commercial album from Depeche Mode. I have mixed feelings. There is no way this is better than Violator, though. Rispondi Avvertimi 1 Helpful. It's hard to disagree with Depeche Mode fans when they say this is the best album they ever did. The only issue I have with it is that playing it once through doesn't have the smoothness of and the cohesiveness of Violator. What should definitely be noted is Daniel Miller's production techniques and Anton Corbijn's visual debuts are featured on this album. Those two artists (perhaps later with Flood and Kevorkian also) really helped Depeche Mode get to that success that they so deserved
