Amon Düül II rose from the communal pit of Amon Düül I, a group of beaters and stompers who made three albums culled from the chaos of a single tribe-jam session. The second outfit saw the madness in that situation, and decided to do their own thing, and not worry about getting a new name (or fighting too hard for the first one). 1971's Tanz der Lemminge (Dance of the Lemmings) was the band's third album, and though they'd already taken the pedal off the spacy, overdriven metal a bit, it's still a sight removed from the pop charts. By that point, only Karrer, John Weinzierl (guitar), Lothar Meid (bass), Falk Rogner (organ) and Peter Leopold (drums) remained from the original group (plus a few guests), though that didn't stop them from filling up their second double LP in a row.

There aren't many double art-rock albums from the early '70s that have stood the test of time, but then again, there aren't many albums like Tanz, and there certainly aren't many groups like Amon Düül II. While exact agreement over which of their classic albums is the absolute standout may never be reached, in terms of ambition combined with good musicianship and good humor, the group's third album, is probably the best candidate still.

Amon Duul II's third album, 1971's Tanze der Lemminge, is rightly regarded as a milestone of the underground '70s German rock scene colloquially known as Krautrock. It strikes an organic balance between freewheeling improvisations and more conventionally composed material, but it doubles down on both-the improvs are more mindbendingly spacy and the songs are more texturally and structurally complex. At a time when psychedelia had waned and prog rock was on the rise, these Teutonic mavericks charted an offbeat course that incorporated both styles.
