The works of the American writer Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) were highly important in the literary life of turn of the century France. Baudelaire translated his tales; Mallarmé put a collection of his poems into French; and it is not unreasonable to claim that Poe's are among the few works to gain, rather than lose, in translation. Claude Debussy (1862-1918), drawn to Symbolist poetry from his early twenties onwards, was haunted by Poe at least by 1890. The main attraction is Debussy's "lyrical drama" based on The Fall of the House of Usher. Debussy worked on a two-part opera using The Fall of the House of Usher and The Devil and the Belfry as his sources. The last, shortest work is an étude by the now-obscure Florent Schmitt, based on The Haunted Palace. The sense of Something lurking in shadowy corners is summoned up in very accomplished impressionistic style.

The Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra (French: Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo) is the main orchestra in the principality of Monaco. The orchestra gives concerts primarily in the Auditorium Rainier III, but also performs at the Salle des Princes in the Grimaldi Forum. The orchestra was founded in 1856 and gave its first concert on 14 December 1856, with an ensemble of 15 musicians, at the "Maison de jeux" (the future casino), under the direction of Alexandre Hermann.
