It would be, to use one of Soft Machine's own titles, to consider Live at Henie Onstad Arts Centre 1971 a superfluous addition to this legendary and long-disbanded British group's gradually growing discography of archival live recordings, from the particularly inspired period between 1970 and 1972. To make the album even more memorable, Reel Recordings' Mike King has included two extended articles.

Here's another excellent live release from Soft Machine that has come out of the woodwork. The sound quality is very good as this was professionaly recorded at the Henie Art Centre in Oslo, Norway on February 28 1971. This two disc set shows the band playing some of their classics, and as usual both discs have no breaks between songs as the band just put their heads down and played. It settles before 8 1/2 minutes then the tempo picks up. Killer stuff. It settles again 12 1/2 minutes in then kicks back in at 16 1/2 minutes. Some vocal experessions from Wyatt a minute later as it calms right down. The vocals and sound echo before 21 minutes. It kicks back in after 22 minutes with keyboards, bass and drums.

Soft Machine Legacy released their fifth album in October 2010: a 58-minute album entitled Live Adventures recorded live in October 2009 in Austria and Germany during a European tour. Founding Soft Machine bassist Kevin Ayers died in February 2013, aged 68, while Daevid Allen dien in March 2015 following a short battle with cancer, aged 7. .On 18 March 2013, the Legacy band released a new studio album, titled Burden of Proof. Travis stated that "legally we could actually be called Soft Machine but for various reasons it was decided to be one step removed. Live at Henie Onstad Art Centre 1971. Ratledge, Dean, Hopper, Wyatt.

Also in Henie Onstad for his own Art Exhibition was Soft Machine’s friend Mark Boyle (1926-2005), who projected his sensory films during this concert. Thankfully, the performance was professionally recorded using classical ambient technique, and safely archived until the Henie Onstad Art Centre, and the musicians, granted Reel Recordings the honor and responsibility to present this magnificent recording for CD release. The results sound for itself as demonstrably the finest stereo recording of Soft Machine ever captured on tape. The venue was designed for acoustic performances so the sound is pretty good the group was obviously loud but not so much so that it became difficult to balance.
