Six is the sixth studio (instrumental) album (half including live material) by the jazz rock band Soft Machine, originally released in 1973 as a double LP. The previous two albums had been issued with slightly different titles in different countries (Fourth and Fifth in the UK, Four and 5 in the USA, with the former album showing a numeral 4 on the cover, while the album before that had been titled Third worldwide). On this album, they deferred to their American standard for worldwide release.

The Soft Machine (also titled "Volume One" as a reissue) is the debut album by the British jazz rock band Soft Machine, released in 1968. Founded in 1966, Soft Machine (one of the central bands in the Canterbury scene) recorded and released this studio album during their 1968 tour of the USA. It was produced by Chas Chandler and Tom Wilson. The work on this album was one of the essential roots in progressive rock and jazz-fusion.

John Etheridge plays his heart out on this album and even puts Soft Machine's latest leader Karl Jenkins in the shade, or at least into a back seat for a while. Etheridge's guitar is extremely prominent throughout this album and I guess he was lucky to have any guitar whatsoever. After the first night of this short French trek the Soft Machine had their van raided by some Parisienne thief. Guitars along with other equipment was stolen. The band members ended up having to borrow gear from elsewhere to finish off their mini French excursion and get their record done. ALIVE AND WELL is a live album recorded in Paris where SOFT MACHINE always had a strong following through its diverse incarnations. As one can guess, this is -AGAIN- a new line- up performing on this album. This is SOFT MACHINE, after all!!
