This CD, which actually features the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra on only two selections, has highlights from a variety of concerts held at Lincoln Center during 1991-1993. A fine octet with clarinetist Michael White, trumpeter Wynton Marsalis and pianist Marcus Roberts do an effective re-interpretation of Jelly Roll Morton's "Jungle Blues," pianist Kenny Barron strides enthusiastically on a solo version of Thelonious Monk's "Trinkle Tinkle" and Jimmy Heath's soprano playing is showcased on "Ellington's Stray-Horn.

Jazz at Lincoln Center, the most ambitious American attempt yet to give jazz an institutional base comparable to a major opera company or symphony orchestra, has been the center of controversy ever since it was launched in 1991. The program has been praised for its well rehearsed and admirably executed tributes to Duke Ellington, Jelly Roll Morton, and Thelonious Monk, for example, but has been attacked in the New York papers and jazz magazines for cronyism and narrowcasting. This album presents 10 live recordings from the program's first two seasons and includes a large number of imposing talents, if little sense of jazz developments since 1965. The full Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra brings persuasive swing and rich tonal colors to Charlie Parker's "Hootie Blues" and Billy Strayhorn's "Multi-Colored Blue.

The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra is an American big band and jazz orchestra led by Wynton Marsalis. The Orchestra is part of Jazz at Lincoln Center, a performing arts organization in New York City. In 1988 the Orchestra was formed as an outgrowth of its concert series, Classical Jazz, with David Berger conducting.
