Album · 2009 · 17 Songs. A Man of No Importance (A New Musical). Lynn Ahrens, Stephen Flaherty & Various Artists. The Essential Broadway.

This lovely cast album from the 1965 Lincoln Center revival of CAROUSEL is a real treat. First of all, John Raitt once again plays the role of Billy Bigelow (after originating it in the original Broadway company), and secondly the lovely Eileen Christy is one of the finest Julie Jordan's captured on disc. Despite its brevity (only one minute forth-five seconds), the highlight of this album was the wonderful contralto voice of Katherine Hilgenberger in her rendition of "You'll Never Walk Alone" It was simply thrilling. I own recordings of many Broadway musicals and not a single one of them has better ensemble performances than this 1994 reissue of the1965 recording of the Lincoln Center's Production of "Carousel.

In 1994, the revival of CAROUSEL at the Lincoln Center Theatre opened for a run of 337 performances, winning five Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical, Best Direction, and Best Choreography. In 1954 General Foods sponsored a tribute to Rodgers & Hammerstein broadcast on multiple networks. Notable productions include the Music Theater of Lincoln Center with John Raitt re-creating the role of Billy (1965); a television version starring Robert Goulet with choreography by Edward Villella, broadcast on ABC-TV (1967); and a summer run at the . Pavilion of the 1958 Brussels Exposition, with Jan Clayton re-creating the role of Julie.

South Pacific was revived on Broadway after its initial 1949 production, but the first major revival was the one undertaken by its composer, Richard Rodgers, in 1967 as part of his stewardship of Music Theater at Lincoln Center, an organization presenting limited summer engagements of legendary musicals at the New York State Theater in the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts complex. That was enough to make this South Pacific at least as good as the 1958 soundtrack, but still a far second to the original Broadway cast album.

Original cast: the premiere or original cast of the production (original Broadway cast; original London cast; original Toronto cast; original Australian cast, et. Columbia's first original Broadway cast album was the 1946 revival of Show Boat, soon followed by an album of Finian's Rainbow.
