Jaakko Vanhala previously worked under the name Zoät-Aon, until ending the project in 2010 to pursue his growing interest in noise music. Approaching the sound from perspective of skillful craftsmanship, high density of detail and perfection of sonic balance. Use of physicality and large metal objects ensures the finest inspiring sounds, yet Vanhala evades all the failures of contemporary music and firmly keeps his feet in the lines of noise.

via http://harshnoise.org/I wasn’t familiar with Jaakko Vanhala’s artistic endeavors (Depther, Zoät-Aon) until recently when all of the sudden I noticed his name being dropped all over noise message boards. To be perfectly honest, I didn’t feel like checking his music out because I figured that it might just be yet another European Power Electronics/Industrial/Noise act. However, having heard Sergey (of MAAAA) raving about Vanhala’s excellent output, I decided to give this CD a try. And fuck me, it was worth it.“Feral Earth” was released in 2012 by the cult Finnish label Freak Animal. The production quality is top-notch, as expected. Now the sonic content of the disc is nothing short of amazing. The album consists of two tracks clocking in at around 20 minutes each. The first thing that sprang into my mind as soon as I pushed play on my stereo was an image of a rabid, doped up monkey freaking out in a scrapyard. Metal sheets flying all over the place, steel pipes getting thrown around like there’s no tomorrow and a complete and utter clusterfuck of aural mayhem. To be honest, at one point somewhere at the end of the 1st track I kind of felt like an idiot – sitting on a couch in front of my stereo like a retard on Ritalin with wide open, watering mouth, listening to what sounds like car crash warfare and loving every second of it.The interesting aspect of that album is the fact that it mostly consists of raw, unprocessed, amplified metal sounds. There is some filtering going on here and there but it’s perfectly mixed in and doesn’t stand out too much which is actually a very good thing because it only adds just a tiny bit of ‘color’ to the otherwise crude and abrasive nature of the compositions. To sum up, I strongly recommend this album. I was pleasantly surprised and will follow Jaakko Vanhala’s output from now on.
