Oh You Pretty Things (2008 Remastered Version).
A new version of Last. Oh You Pretty Things.
Oh! You Pretty Things" is a song written by David Bowie in 1971 for the album Hunky Dory. It opens with only piano and Bowie's vocal, before entering the catchy refrain. The simple piano style has been compared with The Beatles' "Martha My Dear".
Original lyrics of Oh You Pretty Things song by Peter Noone. Explain your version of song meaning, find more of Peter Noone lyrics. Oh, you pretty things, don’t you know You’re driving your mamas and papas insane? Let me make it plain You gotta make way for the homo superior. Wake up you sleepy heads Put on some clothes, shake up your beds Put another log on the fire for me I need some breakfast and coffee.
Oh! You Pretty Things – the second track on Hunky Dory – thus picks up themes from the previous album (The Man Who Sold the World), in particular, After All. However, whereas the previous cut was dark and sinister, Oh! You Pretty Things becomes a jaunty sing-along in the chorus, the piano joined by bass, hand-claps and backing vocals. The wonderful bouncy chorus tells it plain, and again and again: the children are driving the adults insane while they resist and try to hold on to their old lives – but they have to give up their self-centeredness. You Pretty Things was perhaps the first thing Bowie wrote on the piano for the album, and had already been a hit for Peter Noone. It had been in radio sessions twice already in ’71 and an early mix of it had been used on the unreleased Bowpromo white label. The song, however, will really take off in ’72, in particular with the famous Whistle Test broadcast on TV.
