The Thermals are a serious band that's hard to take too seriously. Thankfully that joy deficit isn't a problem on We Disappear, a reunion with producer Chris Walla, which despite its fatalistic title and fixation on failing bodies and fading relationships plays up the fun factor in a way the last few records haven't. It wouldn't be right to call it a return to form, since this band never truly breaks form, but it's got higher highs than any Thermals album since The Body, The Blood, The Machine-and really, the best way to judge a Thermals album is by its highs

Album · 2016 · 10 Songs. On their seventh album, the Portland trio explore themes of isolation over dynamic bursts of lo-fi rock. We Disappear opens with blistering feedback, a sound that sizzles underneath as Hutch Harris shouts, "Into the code, we stay alive!" But the upbeat punk-pop of "My Heart Went Cold" belies post-breakup regrets, and even the initial concept of communal online immortality ( Into the Code ) is rebuked on the dark and sludgy "The Great Dying. It all comes to a dreamy close on "Years in a Day," as our host finds peace with being "always alone

The Thermals' 2013 album, Desperate Ground, was a return to their no-holds-barred punk rock roots, a desperate and broken blast of overdriven noise and shouted melancholy. Arriving in 2016, We Disappear follows it up with more of the same. The fire that they stoked to white-hot temps there is still burning hot and pure here, with Hutch Harris delivering impassioned howls and blown-out guitar riffing, drummer Westin Glass hammering his drums like he's trying to kill them, and bassist Kathy Foster anchoring it all with thick slabs of bass foundation (and the occasional backing vocal). The album barely slows down from there, with the trio landing blow after blow right in the gut. "Hey You" is a catchy, almost pop song that'll be stuck in heads right away; so is the short, sharp "Thinking of Yo. Once or twice, like on the midtempo "In Every Way" or the moody album closer "Years in a Day," the band scales back the noise a bit to let Harris' pleading vocals move to the front. He hasn't lost an ounce of the passion that he brought to the band's first recordings; he sounds as engaged and enraged as ever

That being said, a band should only record what they want to record, and if that's the style they want to write, who am I to stop them" Sadly, rather than offering any improvements, We Disappear is yet another step backwards for the band, with more of what made Desperate Ground an average album, and with less of the few positive qualities.

Entitled We Disappear and produced by former Death Cab for Cutie member Chris Walla, the album is due out March 25th via Saddle Creek. According to frontman Hutch Harris, We Disappear is about modern humankind’s unwillingness to do as the title says. Our privacy used to be so important to us and now everything has changed, he explained to Pitchfork. We freely offer once private information about relationships and reveal everything about our day-to-day lives. We’re trying to preserve our life digitally so when we’re gone people won’t forget us. We’re using technology to become immortal.
