One of the most famous of that committed group of musicians has been the singer Michiko Hirayama and her performance of the 20 Canti di Capricorno, which Scelsi composed for her between 1962 and 1972. The orchestral disc is the most varied of the three, and offers perhaps the best introduction to Scelsi's strange, quasi-mystical world. The Four Pieces on a Single Note, from 1959, is arguably his best known work; Uaxuctum, his 1966 evocation of a Mayan civilisation, includes a chorus and an ondes martenot in the aural mix. Most intriguing of all is La Nascita del Verbo, for chorus and orchestra.

Musical Co-Production.

Giacinto Scelsi (Italian pronunciation: ; 8 January 1905 – 9 August 1988) was an Italian composer who also wrote surrealist poetry in French. He is best known for writing music based around only one pitch, altered in all manners through microtonal oscillations, harmonic allusions, and changes in timbre and dynamics, as paradigmatically exemplified in his revolutionary Quattro pezzi su una nota sola ("Four Pieces on a single note", 1959).

The pieces were composed for the extraordinary voice of Michiko Hirayama. Not merely an interpreter of the songs, Hirayama is truly their instrument. Her extended vocal techniques are both form and substance of the pieces; any new performer will have to scale the immense and vast geographies of her amazing technique. Hirayama certainly sounds euphorically possessed in the Canti del Capricorno.
