The Symphony No. 82, by Jean Sibelius is a symphony in three movements. Sibelius was commissioned to write the symphony by the Finnish government in honour of his 50th birthday, 8 December 1915, which had been declared a national holiday. The symphony was originally composed in 1915; it was revised in 1916 and 1919

4. Pohjola's Daughter, Symphonic Fant, O. 9. Orchestra: Philharmonia Orchestra. Go back twenty years to 1965 and Karajan's celebrated and justly celebrated DG recording with the Berlin Philharmonic. The Philharmonia is no mean orchestra but compared with the Berliners they sound THIN. The BPO's players were first class soloists in their own right and this can also be discerned, the difference, on the two recordings.

This is particularly true, and was particularly necessary, in the Fifth Symphony and Pohjola’s Daughter, both of which have greater realism and depth, and less hardness. It’s also good to see all of these performances gathered together in a box, even if the original jacket concept can’t possibly be of any value when the jacket in question is the Great Performers brown paper wrapping version of Finlandia, Valse triste, and The Swan of Tuonela coupled to the Grieg Peer Gynt Suites. The performances themselves are marvelous. This was always one of the reference Sibelius cycles.
