Originally released in 1965, this Deutsche Grammophon digital transfer sees the legendary team of the Berlin Philharmonic and Herbert von Karajan perform all four of Brahms’s symphonies. This was their first recording of the cycle together and is a testament to their unique and extremely rich interpretations of this Romantic master’s orchestral works. 68: 2. Andante sostenuto 03. Symphony N. in C Minor, Op. 68: 3. Un poco allegretto e grazioso 04. 68: 4. Adagio-Piu andante-Allegro non troppo, ma con brio-Piu allegro 05. Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 73: 1. Allegro non troppo 06.

Almost alone among Austrian conductors, Herbert von Karajan championed the symphonies of Jean Sibelius in German-speaking countries. His mid-'50s recordings with the Philharmonia for EMI were urgent, powerful readings that argued for the inherent greatness of the music

Karajan's mid-1970s Tchaikovsky interpretations are regarded as his finest in a career of performing the Russian composer's last three symphonies. Unitel's films from this period - released here for the first time on DVD - documented the maestro with his great Berlin orchestra on 35mm colour film and in stereo. Others have gotten more sadness out of Tchaikovsk. ut not more virility and controlled intense beauty than Karajan in the Unitel film. Cast: Berliner Philharmoniker Conductor - Herbert von Karajan.

Berliner an (Warner Classics, four CDs). This year is the 25th anniversary of the death of Herbert von Karajan, and Warner Classics is taking it as an opportunity to remaster and repackage the best of its extensive archive of the recordings he made for EMI. Thirteen sets are planned – 100 discs in all – including performances with the Philharmonia, La Scala Milan and the Vienna Philharmonic as well as the Berlin Philharmonic, ranging between 1946 and 1984. Karajan was never reluctant to return to works he had recorded before, and there is inevitably some duplication among these sets.
