Unity (Larry Young album). Unity is an album by jazz organist Larry Young, released on the Blue Note label.
On Unity, jazz organist Larry Young began to display some of the angular drive that made him a natural for the jazz-rock explosion to come barely four years later. While about as far from the groove jazz of Jimmy Smith as you could get, Young hadn't made the complete leap into freeform jazz-rock either. Here he finds himself in very distinguished company: drummer Elvin Jones, trumpeter Woody Shaw, and saxman Joe Henderson
Redirected from Unity (Larry Young)). While not free jazz, the album features innovative experimentation. The title was chosen by Young because "although everybody on the date was very much an individualist, they were all in the same frame of mood. It was evident from the start that everything was fitting together. The album was Young's second for Blue Note, following on from Into Somethin'.
Now reissued by Music Matters on 45 RPM vinyl, the record reveals more about the recording than has likely been heard on previous issues.

Heaven on Earth is an album by American organist Larry Young recorded in 1968 and released on the Blue Note label. there are some explorative solos but the less imaginative funk rhythms lower the content of the music somewhat". All compositions by Larry Young except as indicated.
Unity is Young's first fully realized and original album and it features a style of post-bop that has some similarities to the classic Miles Davis Quintet and some of Herbie Hancock's mid 60s solo work. This style uses the rough no-nonsense melodies of 60s RnB and then moves into improvisations that are abstract, esoteric and based somewhat on the harmonies of early 20th century composers. The difference in the case of Larry Young is that he is using a B-3 instead of a piano, which brings a whole new sound to the world of post bop jazz. Throughout this album Larry burns up the keys on his B-3 and shows once again that he may still be the best Hammond player ever. You can also hear the quartal voicings and scale runs that influenced British prog-rockers like Brian Auger and Keith Emerson. Larry's band mates on here are also impressive, especially drummer Elvin Jones.
