Living Colour chronology. Vivid is the debut studio album by the American rock band Living Colour, released on May 3, 1988 through Epic Records. It was one of the most popular albums of 1988, reaching No. 6 on the . Billboard 200 chart and certified double platinum by the RIAA. The album is also featured in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. In 2017, Rolling Stone ranked Vivid as 71st on their list of 'The 100 Greatest Metal Albums of All Time.

Conceived by Vernon Reid-a Santana-influenced guitarist with experience in New York's avant-jazz scene-the band ripped and ran with a palette that took in screaming metal, lyrical flights, various stripes of funk, and even pseudo-Beach Boys pop (see I Want to Know ). It was a dead-serious mission; "Cult of Personality, the band's trademark song, opened with a sample of Malcolm X's voice.

Living Colour were, and remain, phenomenal musicians who landed in the funk rock arena by default, simply because their talents were too big for every other idiom. Led by guitarist Vernon Reid, a jazz player, funk giant and shredder, and fronted by Corey Glover, Living Colour made an immediate splash with their debut album Vivid. Following such a tremendous hard-rocking opener, the last thing one would expect to hear from the remainder of the album is diversity. Yet, that is exactly what is served up and makes 'Vivid' such an impressive debut. Vivid is Living Colour's debut album, which was released on May 3, 1988. The band was discovered by Mick Jagger while playing a show at the legendary punk club CBGB's in 1987. Although they were considered "unique" by the mainstream media, they attacked the Eurocentrism and racism of America with their music.
