Live album by Otis Redding/The Jimi Hendrix Experience Released: August 26, 1970. The Monterey Pop Festival of 1967 was one of the most significant cultural events of the 20th century. For the first time, the new style of loud rock n roll that had been hatched in London and on the west coast of the US was unleashed on the whole world via international media coverage of this groundbreaking event. I've always preferred Jimi's artsy studio songs to his barn-burning live performances, but I'm probably in a minority on that opinion. Having said that, the first side of this album presents a fairly typical Hendrix outing for that time; a Dylan song, a blues classic, a fusion flavored Hendrix original and a psychotic version of Wild Thing. Like a Rollin Stone is a bit on the boring side, but the other songs have that incredible urgent punk/jazz feeling that only Mitchell and Hendrix can pull off.
The Monterey International Pop Music Festival took place from June 16 to June 18, 1967 and was the brainchild of Lou Adler. Over 200,000 people attended, and it is regarded as the first big rock festival, precursor to Woodstock and all the others of that period. Otis Redding was at the pinnacle of his career at that time. He was booked as the closing act on the Saturday night of the festival, June 17, 1967. He came to the stage following a set by his backup band, Booker T. & the MG's. Jimi Hendrix performed on the final evening of the festival, June 18, 1967. Brian Jones of The Rolling Stones, who did not perform at the festival, introduced The Jimi Hendrix Experience.

The Monterey International Pop Festival was scheduled for June, 1967. In the back of everybody's mind it was to be the opening event for the "Summer of Love". This was a portentous time. In the same month The Beatles released Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Means Club Band, and the song San Francisco (Wear Some Flowers In Your Hair) by Scott McKenzie was about to help set a mood that would influence a generation. The Monterey International Pop-Festival celebrated the strength and the joy of a new culture with a weekend of music, good feelings and flowers which drew some 50,000 marvellous and marvelling people to Northern California in the summer of 1967. These performances have been quoted as being the highlight performances for both of these artists and it is with great pride that I can provide them here for your pleasure.
Monterey Pop (The Criterion Collection). Yes, its 45 years old and sounds outstanding. Only wish they couldve made it a dbl disc. Otis & Jimi were incredible and its great to hear in between great songs and the impromptu of the band. 3 people found this helpful.
Live album by Otis Redding/The Jimi Hendrix Experience Released: August 26, 1970 Label: Reprise Producer: Lou Adler, John Phillips Engineers: Wally Heider, Eric Weinberg Photography: Jim Marshall Cover Layout: Ed Thrasher. The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Who and Otis Redding changed rock forever with incendiary performances that fueled nothing short of a revolution. This record presents two of those performances as best as possible, but cannot convey the feeling of shock and disbelief felt by the people who witnessed these three bands.
Jeffrey Drucker's Most Recent Stories. Historic Performances Recorded at the Monterey International Pop Festival. T his album has to be judged as three-year-old music or simply as a most welcome souvenir. If you were there, you’ll probably like it more than if you weren’t. But even if you weren’t, you’ll find some very satisfying music by two of our most gifted artists. I’m not going to go into why you’ll probably like it more if you were there; see the movie. I was there, and I like it a lot. Starting with the best, the side with Hendrix is devastating.
