The Multiplication Table is an album by American jazz pianist Matthew Shipp which was recorded in 1997 and released on the Swiss hatOLOGY label. The album features a trio with longtime partner William Parker on bass and newcomer Susie Ibarra on drums, who at the time were the rhythm section for the David S. Ware Quartet. Shipp covers three standards, Joseph Kosma's "Autumn Leaves", Duke Ellington's C Jam Blues and Billy Strayhorn's "Take the "A" Train".

Matthew Shipp formally announced his early retirement from recording about a decade ago, at the age of 38, just over ten years after he first appeared on wax. During that period, the pianist had racked up around 15 recordings and established himself as an outspoken, idiosyncratic player with a dark, percussive attack. In attempting to describe his style, the press regularly resorted to knee-jerk references to free jazz pianist Cecil Taylor, mostly because of that signature pounce. In 1997, Shipp recorded The Multiplication Table, a crisp and unpredictable trio date with Parker and Susie Ibarra, the Ware Quartet's drummer at the time.

Matthew Shipp (born December 7, 1960) is an American pianist, composer, and bandleader. Shipp was raised in Wilmington, Delaware, and began playing piano at six years old. His mother was a friend of trumpeter Clifford Brown. He was strongly attracted to jazz, but also played in rock groups while in high school. Shipp attended the University of Delaware for one year, then the New England Conservatory of Music, where he studied with Joe Maneri.

Multiplication Table. CD - Hat Hut Records. When The Multiplication Table was released in 1997, it once and for all threw down a gauntlet to the remaining critics who erroneously chose to see him as a direct spiritual descendent of Cecil Taylor. It was one they couldn't pick up. Shipp has always been a player who has taken the idea of music as a series of worlds and influences and made something entirely new not in response to, but because of them.
