Graceland is Paul Simon’s seventh solo studio album and won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1987. Coming off the commercial disappointment of Hearts and Bones and the end of his marriage to actress Carrie Fisher, Simon became fascinated with the Afrikaans music of South Africa. Despite the cultural embargo placed on the nation at the time due to the apartheid, Simon recorded the album with several South African musicians, and toured with them in support of the album

Paul Simon‘s joyous, vibrant Graceland, released 30 years ago today, remains one of the most beloved albums in pop history. And also one the most controversial. Simon had ventured to South Africa to record the album with local musicians, ignoring an international boycott set in place by the United Nations Anti-Apartheid Committee. What gives the right to wear the cloak of morality? he railed at the time. Their morality comes out of the barrel of a gun.
With Graceland, Paul Simon hit on the idea of combining his always perceptive songwriting with the little-heard mbaqanga music of South Africa, creating a fascinating hybrid that re-enchanted his old audience and earned him a new one. It is true that the South African angle (including its controversial aspect during the apartheid days) was a powerful marketing tool and that the catchy music succeeded in presenting listeners with that magical combination: something they'd never heard before that nevertheless sounded familiar.
As the 25th anniversary celebrations build for the groundbreaking album, Robin Denselow recalls the huge controversy it caused. It was a plush affair for the mid-80s, an era when record sales had already begun to decline, and when music writers had already begun to reminisce about the good old glory days when lavish promotional parties and international flights were commonplace. On 27 August 1986, the Warner label hosted a major event at the Mayfair Theatre in London to mark the release of Paul Simon's adventurous new album, Graceland. We were given lunch, listened to the new work, and.
Paul Simon's decade wasn't going so great when he started work on his sixth solo album in October 1985. The two albums he released in the previous five years were nowhere near as popular as those he made during his mid-'70s run, when Still Crazy After All These Years won the coveted Album of the Year Grammy. They formed the basis of Graceland. Inspired by the recordings, Simon began assembling the tracks that would make up the album, going to London, New York, Los Angeles and Lafayette, L. to collaborate with musicians both familiar to him (like the Everly Brothers, who contribute backing vocals to the title track, and Linda Ronstadt, who sings on "Under African Skies") and some entirely new (Los Lobos, Rockin’ Dopsie and.
Paul Simon – Graceland. Release date: 25th August 1986. On 31st January 1987, Paul Simon went back to N. on the UK album chart with ‘Graceland’, the singer-songwriters seventh solo album. The album brought Simon back to the spotlight, it stayed on the chart for a total 101 weeks and later won the 1987 Grammy Award for Album of the Year, while the title song won the 1988 Grammy Award for Record of the Year. Paul Simon is one of the most successful and respected songwriters of the second half of the 20th century. After reaching worldwide success as one half of Simon and Garfunkel, (where Simon wrote most of the pair’s songs, including three that reached No. 1 on the US singles charts: The Sound of Silence, Mrs Robinson, and Bridge Over Troubled Water ).
