Deep Purple in Rock is, to my mind, a more worthwhile album than Machine Head. I mean, Machine Head is great don't get me wrong, but In Rock just has better material. I absolutely love every song on there, and Speed King, Child In Time, Flight of the Rat, and others are some of the best Deep purple songs out there. In Rock also has an incredibly raw sound that an album like Machine Head doesn't capture, and In Rock is certainly one of the most important pieces in heavy metal history. Also, the songs on In Rock are not overplayed like Smoke on the Water and Highway Star.

Rock fans, and especially Deep Purple devotees, had been hoping against hope that it could happen for years. For all the bad blood, for all of the emotional ups and downs the band’s first phase of success in the late 1960s and early 1970s, there was always that faint possibility that the classic Mk II line-up might find a way of working together again. On 10 November 1984, that became tangible, when the ver-Lord-Paice line-up entered the UK chart with the reunion album Perfect Strangers. Warmly received by most Purple fans, the new album made its UK debut at No. 5, their highest peak with a studio record since Burn reached No. 4 in 1974. US chart entry followed on the 1 December Billboard chart; Strangers became only the band’s second to go platinum in America (after the 1972 classic Machine Head) and reached N. 7 in a 32-week chart run there.
