Blue October’s sixth studio album finds frontman Justin Furstenfeld musing on a split with his wife and the custody battle for his daughter (that’s her artwork gracing the album cover). Needless to say, Any Man In America is an incredibly melancholy and dramatic album. Most songs here retrace the steps leading up to the split in excruciating detail. The Feel Again (Stay) opens with light piano notes building into a ballad where Furstenfeld’s lyrics try to make sense of what just happened while begging his ex-wife to stay

The record chronicles the deeply personal events that transpired in singer Justin Furstenfeld's life after the band's previous release. They include an emotionally draining custody battle over his daughter with his ex-wife, and being thrown into a mental hospital after the singer suffered a breakdown on an airplane.

Blue October may be a band that is detested by many for that one big single, "Hate Me," but they've always been good enough to distinguish themselves from their peers. They've certainly been around long enough, as their 1997 debut album The Answer shows. The mastermind behind Any Man in America is, of course, the band's frontman Justin Furstenfeld. The album takes its inspiration from his divorce with his wife and the separation from his three year-old daughter, Blue. Furstenfeld's lyricism may be far from Shakespearian, but what's important is the emotion he is able to convey through his words. With lines like "Let me start with a 'let you go'" it is obvious that he isn't looking to mask his words in a veil of pretention.
