Karol Rathaus (1895-1954): Polonaise symphonique op. 52 (1943) -- London Symphony Orchestra diretta da JoAnn Falletta -- cover image by Emil Nolde -- Th. .
Rathaus Orchestral Works. Polonaise symphonique. Concerto for Piano and Orchestra. Karol Rathaus’s Piano Concerto (1938-9) has the ominous atmosphere and dogged tread of a work written on the brink of war. In Pirone’s capable hands, it leaves a strong overall impression. The remaining works have a mid-century stylistic anonymity, although the Polonaise would make a lively concert opener.
The Concerto for Cello, Piano, and String Orchestra is a composition for solo cello, piano, and a large string orchestra by the American composer Ralph Shapey. The work was composed for the cellist Joel Krosnick and the pianist Gilbert Kalish and was first performed at Tanglewood in 1989. It was first performed by Krosnick, Kalish, and the Berkshire Music Chamber Orchestra under the composer on July 31, 1989.

Concerto Symphonique N. for Piano & Orchestra in E minor. by John Cox. Orchestra. piano I and piano II. n/a. Let me choose individual parts.
This Piano Quintet demonstrates several facets of the composer’s personality: gravitas, rigour, theatricality, and irony. Its highly personal substance brings out the expressive and lyrical intensity of this work, performed by outstanding chamber musicians. From the Concerto for two trombones by young Canadian composer Matthew Ricketts to the swingin’ tunes of Glenn Miller and Tommy Dorsey, brass instruments take centre stage under the baton of Maestro Kent Nagano . Wednesday September 11 19 8:00 PM.
