Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 58, was composed in 1805–1806. Beethoven was the soloist in the public premiere as part of the concert on 22 December 1808 at Vienna's Theater an der Wien. It is scored for solo piano and an orchestra consisting of a flute, two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, two horns, two trumpets, timpani, and strings.

Performers: Rudolf Serkin, piano Boston Symphony Orchestra Conductor: Seiji Ozawa. Serkin's performances are, as I said in my subject line, brilliant. Seiji Ozawa and the Boston Symphony Orchestra deliver magnificient readings - beautiful, bold, and elegant playing. Telarc's digital recording (although early 1980s digital) is marvelous. This recording is a must have for Beethoven fans, pianists, and especially those of us beholden to the art of Rudolf Serkin!

Piano concertos recorded by Rudolf Serkin in his twilight years have been somewhat sniffily received by many critics. In this case I am happy to relate that the only problem is the extensive competition in the current catalogue. Pianists of every age worth their salt have set down their own versions. There are so many that any newcomer is bound to find it difficult in today’s crowded scene. The present issue has Seiji Ozawa as conductor and he is often received in much the same way as the soloist  . Performed by Rudolf Serkin on piano, and Boston Symphony Orchestra conducted by Seiji Ozawa. Track Listing: A1. Beethoven Piano Concerto N. in G major O. 8, Allegro moderato B1. 8, Andante con moto, Rondo: Vivace.

Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 3 "choral" Fantasy Rudolf Serkin, Piano Seiji Ozawa Boston Symphony Orchestra John Oliver. Rudolf Serkin was not exactly a youth when he recorded this disc in 1983, and he certainly does bring a lifetime of experience at the piano to the performances. There are deep insights here, and evidence of deep understanding of Beethoven's third concerto, aplenty, and much of the phrasing, shading and nuancing is absolutely wonderful - if some of the passages are a tad rough and ramshackle it is easy to forgive it. What is not so easy to overlook is the absence of fire and passion. The first version of this concerto dates from 1795, but it is finalized three years later. The concert was first performed by Beethoven in the Burgtheater, Vienna on March 25, 1795 and was dedicated to Carl Nicklas Edler von Nickelsberg. It was published in 1801, by which time he had also published the Piano Concerto No. 1 in C major, although it had been composed after the B-flat concerto. Apparently the composer thought little of this work as he referred to it as not one of the best when he submitted the concerto to a publisher
