The Taste of Tea (茶の味 Cha no Aji) is the third film by Japanese writer and director Katsuhito Ishii. The film has been referred to as a "surreal" version of Ingmar Bergman's Fanny and Alexander (1982). It was a selection of the Cannes Film Festival. The film is concerned with the lives of the Haruno family, who live in rural Tochigi Prefecture, the countryside north of Tokyo.

The taste of tea (茶の味) 2004, Katsuhito Ishii (石井 克人). One of my favourite movies of all times. You know when you love something so much, you have trouble articulating it? That’s me here. I like every detail of the story, the cinematography and the characters. It feels like a dozen great movies rolled into one (in a good way). It’s the story of an eccentric family living in the countryside, and their everyday life. It’s quirky, joyous, beautiful and serene and sad all at once.

The Taste of Tea - The mother, Yoshiko (Satomi Tezuka), is an animation artist that tries to resurrect her career while maintaining the daily tasks of her family in a rural setting outside of Tokyo. The father, Nobou (Tomokazu Miura), works as a clin. This is a pretty typical Japanese movie. It is a loosely coordinated melee of vignettes surrounding a family that lives in a small village in the countryside. Like many typical Japanese films it is filled with absurdity, long quiet and slow sections, scenery, violence.
