Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star (often called simply Black Star) is the only studio album by Black Star, a hip hop duo consisting of emcees Talib Kweli and Mos Def (the latter of whom now goes by Yasiin Bey). The album was released on September 29, 1998, to critical acclaim. The title is a reference to the Black Star Line, a shipping line founded by Pan-Africanist Marcus Garvey.

From 1998 Album: "Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star". In 2001, Black Star performed "Money Jungle" with Ron Carter and John Patton for the Red Hot Organization's compilation album Red Hot + Indigo, a tribute to Duke Ellington, which raised money for various charities devoted to increasing AIDS awareness and fighting the disease. uk reported Kweli has said that a new Black Star album was "in the pipeline". On Talib Kweli's Myspace he posted up a video saying that "We're going to find Mos Def and put it on camera that there will be a second Black Star album.

The song encourages black and brown women to be proud of their hair and complexion, and to not be influenced by Western beauty standards. This pairing was one of the most important moments in all of Hip-Hop for me. When this album came out, R&B was still not super huge in rap, and artists who included softer tracks like "Brown Skin Lady" were kind of shunned. This album changed that for me. Mos is one of the most respected rappers of all time, and these guys seriously made a hurricane with this album. Both MC's go so hard on this album, but their execution of including R&B elements was. For some fucking reason i never rated this. But is some fucking incredible golden age music Mos Def and Talib Kweli join forces to create one of the best hip hop albums ever made. There is no introduction more fitting than this to Mos Def and Talib Kweli’s collaborative effort Black Star. Complete with heartfelt lyrics, eclectic beats, and rhyming prowess, they paint their masterpiece for the ears and mind alike. It is important to note that Mos Def and Talib were up and coming during this release, which makes the magnitude of the release so much greater.
Black Star chose well: their album was an intelligent antidote to the madness, thinking about what it meant to be an African-American in the world at that time. Even their name was a statement: Black Star was the shipping line launched by Marcus Garvey, the Jamaican campaigning politician whose pan-African philosophy inspired the Rastafarian movement. Both MCs were known to the hip-hop community before they formed Black Star. Mos Def had guested on tracks by Da Bush Babees and De La Soul in 1996; Talib Kweli worked on an album by Mood and teamed up with DJ Hi-Tek in Reflection Eternal.
