The Stanley Brothers were an American bluegrass duo of singer-songwriters and musicians made up of brothers Carter Stanley (1925–1966) and Ralph Stanley (1927–2016). Ralph and Carter performed as The Stanley Brothers with their band, The Clinch Mountain Boys, from 1946 to 1966. Ralph kept the band name when he continued as a solo artist after Carter's death, from 1967 until his own death in 2016.

This album was recorded in 1959 by the influential King label out of Cincinnati. The 12 bluegrass songs featured here, including the rousing "How Mountain Girls Can Love," reflect not only the era of this fine recording, but also the two brothers' humble Shenandoah Valley roots. There are also a number of rollicking instrumentals, including "Clinch Mountain Backstep" and "Midnight Ramble," both of which showcase Ralph Stanley's peerless banjo picking. At their best, as they are here, the Stanleys are the finest duo in the history of bluegrass.

Notes

The label on this particular pressing is misprinted. The songs for Side One are listed as "Side 2". The above pictures help confirm this because the letter on each label that follows the catalog number is switched (A means Side One and B means Side Two but they are flipped.) Other pressings such as release number 6336257 have this error corrected.
