It is totally atmospheric and ethereal without sacrificing an ounce of menace or mystery. Yes, the production is raw but that is in no way a bad thing. A new manifestation of this sad phenomenon is provided by Black Cilice, a solo project from Portugal, which released last summer a second album called Summoning the Night. This atrocity’s cover is particularly enlightening as to its content: minimalist and remarkably ugly (the same visual concept was also already used for the previous album). Yet beneath the thick layer of stifling distortion, there are a few sparks that would have deserved a better fate.
