When Betty Wright Live was first released in 1978, there was some speculation on whether or not it was really a live album or simply a studio recording with canned applause. To be sure, the applause doesn't sound authentic, and the original LP's liner notes listed neither a recording date nor a location. But whether it was recorded on stage or in the studio, this album (reissued on CD in 1992) provides much evidence of Wright's vitality as a singer.

Betty Wright is an American R&B/soul singer who rose to fame in the 1970s. Her music is a pure reflection of her progressive and endearing character. She has become recognized as one of few female artists to have achieved popularity through self-promotion and self-releasing strategies. Wright was born as Bessie Regina Norris on 21 December, 1953 in Miami, Florida . She grew up with six siblings and was the baby of the family. Wright started her music career nearly before she could walk or talk. Before Wright put out her sophomore album I Love the Way You Love she issued several well received singles such as the precocious Pure Love and the n. R&B charting single, Clean Up Woman. The latter of the singles was one of Wright’s all time biggest hits. It crossed over to the US pop charts at n., remaining there for 14 weeks and subsequently achieving gold status.
