Outlandos d'Amour (a loose French translation of Love’s Outlaws) is the debut album of iconic British rock band The Police. The album is considered to be one of the best debuts of all time and the beginning of a journey that would eventually turn The Police into the Biggest Band in the World. Outlandos d’Amour Q&A. The roots of Outlandos d'Amour were laid in early 1978 when The Police checked into Surrey Sound Studios to record a few tracks. Our first album was recorded on second-hand multitrack tape - at that time, we couldn't afford our own tape," said Sting. We were working in a home-made studio in Leatherhead belonging to Nigel Gray, a doctor whose hobby was recording. The Police toured Europe with Cherry Vanilla and Wayne County before releasing this explosive debut album. Outlandos d'Amour' includes reggae love songs with heartbreak lyrics of utter simplicity ('Next to You', 'So Lonely', 'Hole in My Life' and 'Can't Stand Losing You'). The rest of the cuts are incisive social satire. Peanuts, which sounds like the Kinks until Summers's Hendrixesque psychedelic guitar break, is about the price of fame.
As it turns 40, The Police’s debut album, Outlandos D’Amour, boasts an enviable reputation. Widely regarded as one of new wave’s key records, it’s racked up multi-platinum sales since its release, and is rightly cited as the disc which set the band on the road to superstardom. While their subsequent chart-topping albums would contain far more ambitious songwriting and musicianship, the Police's 1978 debut, Outlandos d'Amour (translation: Outlaws of Love) is by far their most direct and straightforward release. Although Sting, Andy Summers, and Stewart Copeland were all superb instrumentalists with jazz backgrounds, it was much easier to get a record contract in late-'70s England if you were a punk/new wave artist, so the band decided to mask their instrumental prowess with a set of strong, adrenaline-charged rock, albeit with a reggae tinge.

The overwhelming notion that The Police are far more effective at keeping things simple, at least on this album, is further driven home by the existence of its two most memorable moments, the uber single Roxanne and lyrically dark, striking Can’t Stand Losing You. Both tracks are built on reggae undertones, and at times are mirror images in song structure, complete with jumpy verses and driving, repetitive choruses.
