In fact, Gung Ho as a whole feels like the album the high-priestess of punk didn't make in the early '80s, a time when she was laying low and a number of artists inspired by her visionary early works were racking up MTV and modern-rock airtime. Gung Ho is somewhat muddled in execution, but then again, so are the times. Even for a Patti Smith album, GUNG HO is uneven, but it really seems to me that being uneven isn’t the problem; it is the combination of unevenness and unexpected commerciality. This album is meant to inspire us Little Guys to take heart and take action. Patti's fight is for honesty and salvation, and there are few recent rock albums which fight the good fight with such potency. If you love Patti's previous work, you will love this album.

Now, with Gung Ho, she’s back to life, taking on the whole world. She belts manifestoes, plunges headlong into love, offers benedictions and hurls herself into history and myth. The album’s producer, Gil Norton (whose crescendos for the Pixies were an alternative-rock cornerstone), has subtly filled out the sound of the Patti Smith Group without losing its handmade, jamming essence. Guitar tones resonate through the mix, and new lines snake through what used to be hollow space. Smith isn’t withdrawing into a utopian haze. She’s ready to fight for her right to a higher purpose. The other thing that has always impressed me about him is he is kind-of gung-ho, if he gets hit and hurt – most people it’s fight or flight – he wants to fight. That is why he is so exciting.
