Purple Rain is the sixth studio album by American singer, songwriter, producer, and t Prince. It is the first to feature the billing of his band the Revolution, and is the soundtrack to the 1984 film of the same name. The album was released on June 25, 1984, by Warner Bros. In the United States the album debuted at No. 11 on the Billboard 200 the week of July 14, 1984 with approximately . million copies sold.

Simultaneously more focused and ambitious than any of his previous records, Purple Rain finds Prince consolidating his funk and R&B roots while moving boldly into pop, rock, and heavy metal with nine superbly crafted songs. Even its best-known songs don't tread conventional territory: the bass-less "When Doves Cry" is an eerie, spare neo-psychedelic masterpiece; "Let's Go Crazy" is a furious blend of metallic guitars, Stonesy riffs, and a hard funk backbeat; the anthemic title track is a majestic ballad filled with brilliant guitar flourishes.

This version includes two discs, the first being a 2015 remastered version of the album, and the second being a collection of unreleased tracks called From the Vault & Previously Unreleased. Purple Rain (Deluxe Expanded Version) Q&A.

Purple Rain was a landmark that solidified Prince’s standing as the preeminent pop genius of his generation; more than three decades on, it still retains all of its power. Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet band were doubling down on white-man soul with the basic but wildly popular Old Time Rock & Roll, and Michael Jackson was re-wiring the industry with an album composed almost entirely of number 1 pop hits that spent 37 weeks lording over the Billboard charts. Prince’s keyboardist, Dr. Fink, recalls that during the 1999 tour, his band leader asked him what makes Seger’s music so popular. Well, he's playing mainstream pop-rock, Fink told him. If you were to write something along these lines, it would cross things over for you even further.

Purple Rain is the sixth studio album by American recording artist Prince, the first to feature his backing band The Revolution, and is the soundtrack album to the 1984 film of the same name. Purple Rain is regularly ranked among the best albums in music history, and is widely regarded as Prince's magnum opus. Time magazine ranked it the 15th greatest album of all time in 1993, and it placed 18th on VH1's Greatest Rock and Roll Albums of All Time countdown. Rolling Stone ranked it the second-best album of the 1980s and 76th on their list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time".
