In 1993 Elvis Costello released an album by the name of The Juliet Letters, a collection of classical pieces recorded with The Brodsky Quartet. Perhaps the most significant thing about this side project was the fact that Costello had finally learned to read and write music, a stunning revelation given the incredible amount of songs and albums he had already amassed. After all the musical departures and experiences of the past few years Elvis picked up an electric guitar and began writing rock n' roll songs again

Album · 1994 · 15 Songs. Reuniting with The Attractions for the first time in eight years, Costello turned up the kinetic energy-and the amplifiers-on this 1994 album. The bracing 13 Steps Lead Down captures the group’s alchemy, with cracking drums, loping bass, carnival organ, and crunchy guitars accompanying joyously descending harmonies. Whether lacing lovely ballads with arsenic ( This Is Hell ) or nodding to his younger New Wave self ( Sulky Girl ), Costello is in his element, thumbing through the thesaurus while getting things off his chest.
