Illmatic is the debut album of American rapper Nas, released on April 19, 1994, by Columbia Records. After signing to the label with the help of MC Serch, Nas recorded the album during 1992 and 1993 at Chung King Studios, D&D Recording, Battery Studios, and Unique Recording Studios in New York City.

Illmatic XX isn’t too special when compared to previous reissues, sans the inclusion of I’m a Villain (which features lyrics that are reused throughout the album) and Nas and crew’s 1993 appearance on The Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Show. Part of the reason is how the original cuts have etched themselves into the hip-hop ethos; fans will naturally have a Pavlovian preference toward them. Another reason is that they contort the scope of the original material

Illmatic is the gold standard that boom-bap connoisseurs refer to in the same way that Baby Boomers talk about Highway 61 Revisited. nas has some of the best lyrics ever on this album. he has stories of his life, tales of struggling. i like the production, and felt that each beat fit perfectly with the respective lyrics being rapped over it. i dont necessarily agree with all of the 100s, but can easily see why this is such a praised album. fav tracks: life's a bitch, the world is yours, memory lane.

Disc 1, the original debut album, has been remastered from the original source tapes and disc 2 features 10 rare remixes, demos & freestyles from the era. "With Illmatic, I didn't think about it.
