The desert blues has developed into its own musical genre, the root of the blues. Following its initial popularization by the late Ali Farka Touré (who is represented here, of course, showing how stripped-down his music could be compared to those who have followed), it has really blossomed thanks to the influx of Tuareg bands. The desert environment isn’t particularly well suited to the frantic pace and urban politics of punk, so inspiration was found in 60s and 70s hard rock giants such as Black Sabbath and Blue Cheer, and enabled by distortion, amplification, alcohol, marijuana and psychedelics. The fuzzy desert rock sound overlaps with similar genres such as stoner rock and doom metal, and not every band below comes from a region rich in coyotes and cacti. Does this branch of heaviness have to be performed by bona fide desert dwellers?

Documentary abot the Desert Rock Scene. With the same autonomy that was inherent to this scene, its story has been portrayed: Lo Sound Desert was self-financed for good reasons – above all to authentically reflect the scene’s own approach. Now, after 10 years of production, the film is finally what it was intended to be – an intimate insight into a unique music scene, that is framed and coloured by a very unusual environment.
