Recorded with his then-partner Dani Siciliano, the album continues Around the House’s investigations into intimacy and identity both lyrically and literally, with much of the source material sampled from bodily functions like clacking teeth and brushing hair. But the music’s too lush to feel pedantic, thanks in large part to Siciliano’s delivery, which swings between defiance and vulnerability, and to arrangements that lean heavily on jazz piano and brushed drums. On the more uptempo cuts, classic deep house provides the blueprint for skippy, tidy rhythm tracks  . Electronic music is often associated with indoors, so they brought it outdoors.

They were living in a small house in Burbank when they found what they thought was a diamond in the rough and bought it 20 years ago. The house didn’t sell because it was ugly, Mr. Jacobson said flatly, standing in the tiled entry hall. But the house had good bones, he added, and a double-wide lot with a pool, terraces off the upstairs bedrooms, a large living room with a fireplace and exposed wood beams. They started down the mountain. It was 65 miles to the crown jewel of their Golden State holdings.

The landmark electroacoustic album of the decade, De Natura Sonorom trades the snap cuts and sharp edges of much musique concrète for something much more fluent, beguiling, authored. Working from a vast catalogue of sound sources, De Natura Sonorum is a creole of organic sounds and electronic textures. He’ll go down in history as the guy whose safety-pinned shirts and shock of spiked hair invented the punk look (later borrowed by Malcolm McLaren to dress the Sex Pistols), but Richard Hell remains strangely underrated compared to his CBGB peers, chiefly known for just one song – the epochal ‘Blank Generation’.
