Beastie Boys - Interview Paul's Boutique 20 Year (Part.
Paul's Boutique is the second studio album by the American hip hop group Beastie Boys. Apart from the group's vocals, the album is almost entirely composed of samples.
Paul’s Boutique is the sophomore album from legendary Hip-Hop trio the Beastie Boys. The recording sessions for the album took place in Delicious Vinyl founder Matt Dike’s apartment and at the Record Plant in Los Angeles. The sessions took place in the period of about a year from 1988 to 1989. The album was produced by Los Angeles duo Dust Brothers, in conjunction with Mario Caldato J. and the Beastie Boys themselves. The album was originally meant to be released as a Dust Brothers instrumental album, but the Beastie Boys persuaded the duo to let them record vocals over the tracks.
A track-by-track sprint through the landmark album’s most important samples. The Beastie Boys’ Paul’s Boutique was a masterpiece in sampling, and an album that could never be made in the same way again. Alongside 3 Feet High & Rising by De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest’s Low End Theory, Paul’s Boutique marked a change in hip-hop, away from the gangsta rap of . A and towards the . Age of rap music you could dance to.
Featuring production by the Dust Brothers, the recording sessions for the album took place at Mario G's Studio in Los Angeles and The Opium Den in Brooklyn, New York from 1988 to 1989, after which the recordings underwent mixing at the Manhattan-based Record Plant Studios.
The Beastie Boys’ landmark second album is remastered and reissued 20 years on. It’s easy to forget exactly how painted into a corner the Beastie Boys were after Licensed to Ill came out. Every complaint people harbor against . Not to mention jetting their asses to Los Angeles to cut records with the dudes who produced Tone Lōc’s Wild Thing. When Paul’s Boutique famously tanked upon release-peaking at on a pre-Soundscan Billboard 200 and, even more damningly, only on the R&B/Hip-Hop Top Albums chart-the haters triumphantly chortled along with 3rd Bass: Screamin’ ‘Hey Ladies,’ Why bother? Twenty years later, nobody’s asking that question.
