A symbol of Russian nature and Russian beauty, the birch tree ( bereza or berezka in Russian) has a very special place in the country’s culture. It is a poetic symbol of the feminine, a lyrical image of spring, light and virginal purity. The slender birch brings to mind the image of a humble girl, beautiful, and very Russian. The word bereza is very ancient and is connected with the verb to keep, to take care (berech), since the Slavs considered the birch as a gift from God, given to them for protection. The birch had to be planted near the house and people tried to surround the village.

The birch tree is a symbol of the Russian natural environment and of Russian beauty, and has a very special place in the country’s culture. The birch tree was once worshipped as a goddess. It was believed to ward off evil spirits and make wishes come true. Tributes to the birch are found in Russian art, songs, poems and folk tales. The famous poet Sergei Esenin wrote his own poetic tribute to the tree, which several generations of Russians learned by heart at primary school (you can read it at the end of this post). Birch is extremely pliable
There was a Birch Tree in the Field. This Russian folk round song was known at least . centuries ago, when it became part of the collection of Russian folk songs, but most likely it was born even before that. The music theme of the song was popular among Russian and foreign composers. Hey, Little Apple! This song is performed like a ditty (folk rhymed proverbs), and the words are often changed by the performer. The most common ditty: Hey, little apple, but where are you rolling to? You will get in my mouth – and will never come out! Or, for example, here is a naughty version of the ditty:.
If you see a Russian hugging a tree, don’t be surprised – they’re most likely trying to soak up some positive energy or to heal an ailment. Here are 5 trees that have been praised by Russians since the Slavic times. Alexander Kolbasov/TASS. One of the most common trees in the country, the birch is one of the most Russian trees and has inspired many songs, poems, and paintings. It’s a symbol of the country and has held a place in the hearts of Russians since ancient times
To be born Russian, to remain Russian And save this happiness, When and wherever to wander– Such as grandfathers,to lay down in earth. The birch was planted near the gate, there was a bank and people could speak with a tree and ask it to give them might and strength. Birch forest is light and clean and is always full of birds, berries and mushrooms. It is really hard to imagine the Russian sauna without the birch broom. Phytoncides out of leaves and buds sterilize the air. Especially successfully they cope with pathogens of typhoid fever, tuberculosis and diphtheria
