Louis Armstrong (August 4, 1901 – July 6, 1971), nicknamed Satchmo or Pops, was an American jazz trumpeter and singer from New Orleans, Louisiana. Missing lyrics by Louis Armstrong? Know any other songs by Louis Armstrong?
The following events occurred in July 1971: Following the retirement of Bert Hendrickson, Justin O'Byrne becomes Father of the Australian Senate, having served longer than any other currently-serving senator. British Royal Navy ship HMS Artemis sinks in 9 metres (30 ft) of water while moored at the shore establishment HMS Dolphin at Gosport during refuelling. The ship is raised a few days later and decommissioned. The United States Postal Service founded.
Louis Armstrong was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States on July 4, 1900 into a poor African American family. He had a difficult childhood. In 1902, when Louis was just an infant, his father, William Armstrong deserted the family and married another woman. Louis then married Lucille Wilson in October 1942, a singer at the Cotton Club, to whom he was married until his death in 1971. Armstrong's marriages never produced any offspring, though he loved children. However, in December 2012, 57-year-old Sharon Preston-Folta claimed to be his daughter from a 1950s affair between Armstrong and Lucille "Sweets" Preston, a dancer at the Cotton Club.
Louis Armstrong (August 4, 1901 – July 6, 1971), nicknamed Satchmo or Pops, was an American trumpeter, composer, singer and occasional actor who was one of the most influential figures in jazz. His career spanned five decades, from the 1920s to the 1960s, and different eras in jazz. Coming to prominence in the 1920s as an "inventive" trumpet and cornet player, Armstrong was a foundational influence in jazz, shifting the focus of the music from collective improvisation to solo performance.

Louis Armstrong, who was born July 4th 1900, the Back O’ Town section (Jane alley) in New Orleans. This was according to Louis Armstrong himself in the opening line of a book about his life that he wrote in 1969; admittedly not simply a straight forward narrative journey from his birth in the Crescent City to his red brick home in Queens, New York. It was also a series of moralistic homilies. The only problem with what he wrote was that he got one vital thing wrong – the date of his birth.
Louis Armstrong died at his home in Queens on July 6, 1971. His front-page Times obituary noted that he had observed his 71st birthday on Sunday, just two days earlier. That this quintessential American success story was born on July 4, 1900, always seemed too perfect to be true. Call it poetic license. The date he (and everyone else) celebrated was, as the old saying goes, close enough for jazz. Read the obituary Louis Armstrong, Jazz Trumpeter and Singer, Dies.
