Highland Schottische. Accordion – Peter Wyper. The song titles are extremely faded. Under magnification and using Photoshop to bring out more detail I was able to finally see the information (example picture in More Images). There is a space between the A and 716 in the catalog number. Under each title it just says Accordion Solo. This is the Standard Disc Record version of Peter Wyper - Lord Lynedoch, Highland Schottische. Strathspey And Hornpipe "Lord Lynedoch", Highland Schottische (Shellac, 10").

In Scottish Country Dancing, the Highland Schottische setting step is a special Setting step, taking twice as long as the Strathspey setting step and used in a few dances such as The Robertson Rant and The Garry Strathspey. For consistency with the diagrams for other steps, the first bar is shown in the lower diagram and the third in the upper diagram. For a few Figures, notably the Highland schottische poussette, one Dancer of each Couple must start on the left foot; if so, start at the beginning of bar 2 but from standing with both feet in first Position. Note that, in the Ceilidh Dance, The Schottische, and in the Highland Dancing répertoire from which this step derives, it is performed at about twice the pace.

Peter Wyper (1861 in Lanarkshire, Scotland – 1920) was a player of the diatonic button accordion (or melodeon), believed to have been the first person to ever be recorded playing the accordion, which he did on wax cylinder in 1903 Discography. Because the strathspey rhythm has four strong beats to the bar, it is played quickly (generally ranging from 108 beats per minute, for Highland dance, up to 160 beats per minute, for step dance), and contains many dot-cut 'snaps', it is a rhythmically tense idiom. Traditionally, a strathspey will be followed by a reel, which is in 2 2 with a swung rhythm, as a release of the rhythmic tension created during the strathspey. These days there are at least four, some would say seven, varieties: the bouncy schottische, the strong strathspey, the song or air strathspey, all three of which can be enjoyed for dancing, and the competition strathspey for the Great Highland bagpipe, primarily intended as a display of virtuosity. Although band and solo competition bagpiping generally involves a complicated, heavily ornamented setting, traditional pipers often play simpler, more rhythmically driven versions.
