Indian Summer was an American emo band originally from Oakland, California. Their sound leaned heavily on loud-soft dynamics. Many of their songs built up to chaotic, cathartic climaxes. The band released a full 7" on Repercussion Records, split 7" with Embassy, and split 7 inches with Current and Ordination of Aaron.

The emo music scene often reminds me of my post-childhood, young adult nostalgia phase. Bands like I Hate Myself, Saetia, and especially Indian Summer cause the realization of emotion in all places, the loss of innocence, and the aggression building up inside. Often anxieties would cause people to lose control, and hurt themselves and others. Others turned to drugs or alcohol. Said songs do not cause emotional attachment, and honestly, are underdeveloped and lazily written, degrading the quality of this album severely and making it more difficult to take this band seriously. Though the tracks on this album are high in quality, they were obviously produced very poorly; underdeveloped, "Science 1994" just ends up sounding like another punk record, diverse in itself, but sonically generic.

Though Indian Summer's raucous punk stylings are a far cry from Bessie Smith's blues, the heartbreak seems universal. Recorded in 1988 but not released until 1994, Lyburnum Wits End Liberation Fly still sounds ahead of its time. The band tempers its breakneck punk with guitar skree and dynamics shaped by British post-punk and goth, without directly tipping a hat to either. Lyrically, the songs take on white, male, American imperialism – "emo" in intensity, but far removed from the self-absorption that defined their contemporaries and followers.
