The Complete Recordings is a compilation album by American blues musician Robert Johnson, released August 28, 1990 on Columbia Records. The album's recordings were recorded in two sessions in Dallas and San Antonio, Texas for the American Record Company (ARC) during 1936 and 1937. Most of the songs were first released on 78rpm records in 1937. The Complete Recordings contains every recording Johnson is known to have made, with the exception of an alternate take of "Travelling Riverside Blues".

A double-disc box set containing everything Robert Johnson ever recorded, The Complete Recordings is essential listening, but it is also slightly problematic. The problems aren't in the music itself, of course, which is stunning and the fidelity of the recordings is the best it ever has been or ever will be. Instead, it's in the track sequencing. As the title implies, The Complete Recordings contains all of Johnson's recorded material, including a generous selection of alternate takes

Robert Johnson is the most important blues musician who ever lived. I have never found more deeply soulful. His music remains the most power cry that I think you can find in a human voice. Ravi Shankar and Robert Johnson are the only two guitar players I listen to. -George Harrison. Such is Robert Johnson’s influence on music. I just purchased The Complete Recordings a few months back and it is now on regular rotation on my ipod. Mr. Johnson must have sold his soul to the devil to play like that, cause he sure can play the blues. rica November 22nd 2011.

The Complete Recordings contains all of Johnson's recorded material, including a generous selection of alternate takes. All of the alternates are sequenced directly after the master. Robert L. Johnson was one of the artists at the absolute root of the music we now know as the Delta Blues. This album is an opportunity to listen to the music as it was first performed in the Mississippi Delta where it was born. I have read an opinion that Robert Johnson actually invented blues music, and although I don't think the evidence supports that claim, he was certainly a powerful early influence in its development.

If the blues has a truly mythic figure, one whose story hangs over the music the way a Charlie Parker does over jazz or a Hank Williams does over country, it's Robert Johnson, certainly the most celebrated figure in the history of the blues. Of course, his legend is immensely fortified by the fact that Johnson also left behind a small legacy of recordings that are considered the emotional apex of the music itself

Robert Johnson is the foundation to which all other Blues artists have built their career on. He was re-packaged and sold back to America in many versions including: The Rolling Stones, Cream, Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin. He had influence on Bob Dylan in the 1960's which was over 2 decades since his passing. He is still mentioned on the Greatest Guitarists of All-time. I will say that these recordings/versions may not be the best there is to offer, but the more you listen to them the better that become.
