Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band are an on-again off-again project led by one of England's finest folk singers, performing nothing but traditional and traditionally styled Christmas music. CAROLS AT CHRISTMAS IN CONCERT is a 17-track live set originally recorded in 1998, featuring such beloved tunes as "Coventry Carol," "Ding Dong Merrily On High," and "Angels from the Realms of Glory.
Like Vaughan Williams – who collected all of the Trad folk songs here – Maddy Prior and her band care more about the spirituality and heritage of a good tune than any religious sentiment behind i. What that means for the listener is that while this album ticks the minstrel and maiden boxes, caution is needed if you're thinking of putting it on as you tuck into the turkey on Christmas Day – it might strike Wicker Man-like fear into the hearts of any non-folky visitors.
Carols at Christmas in Concert. I love Maddy Prior's voice on this album. There is not a weak song on the album. Classic Maddy Prior and The Carnival Band. Superior to Carols and Capers in my opinion. Our family is very fond of this artist (including a kiddo who has eccentric tastes for his age-he begs for Maddy Prior). Andrew 'Jub' Davis joined the band for a New Years' concert in 1985 and, according to "this date marks the band's real birthday". There have been four lineup changes since then: Charles Fullbrook left in 1990 and Raph Mizraki took his place. Steve Banks joined in 1999 when Raph Mizraki moved on. Bill Badley stopped appearing regularly. Steno Vitale joined in 2002 to form the current line-up. Maddy Prior's collaboration with the band began near the start of their existence in 1984 for a BBC radio programme of Christmas carols. Since then, Maddy has featured on most Carnival Band albums. They have co-written material. For example, they wrote and toured a song cycle based on the life of Worcester-born heroine Hannah Snell. Maddy toured with them again in 2007 for their "Music for Tavern and Chapel" tour. Other performers have appeared on their CDs.
