Description

New music from Holger Czukay at last! Or is it? Unfortunately neither the label nor Holger himself have cared about giving the fan much useful information about this. When was it done? Who apart from Holger himself was involved in it? We don't know and the cover (which looks like it took no more than 10 minutes to make) won't tell. It is pretty intense and the fastest and loudest thing on this album. Can fans will probably like this. I remember that Holger did something like this when I saw him in the Roundhouse in 2009. Overall the listener gets quite a bit of interesting and fascinating new material, so this is certainly a worthwhile acquisition.

Background information After his departure from Can, Czukay recorded several albums. One of his trademarks was the use of shortwave radio sounds and his early pioneering of sampling, in those days involving the painstaking cutting and splicing of magnetic tapes. Can co-founder and bassist Holger Czukay has died, aged 79. Czukay formed the seminal krautrock band in 1968 alongside keyboardist Irmin Schmidt, guitarist Michael Karoli and drummer Jaki Liebezeit. The band – who wrote and recorded much of the material through the technique of improvisational songwriting – crafted a sound which blended an influential mix of jazz, rock and psychedelia. Their first official album, ‘Monster Movie’, was released in 1969, and they would go on to record twelve studio albums, ending with 1989’s ‘Rite Time’  . He recorded his final solo album, ’11 Years Innerspace’, in 2015. Czukay was found dead at Can’s Inner Space Studio in Weilerswist, Germany, where he’d reportedly been living as well.

Czukay co-founded Can in 1968 alongside keyboardist Irmin Schmidt, drummer Jaki Liebezeit and guitarist Michael Karoli. Prior to forming the group, he studied under German avant-garde composer Karlheinz Stockhausen and worked briefly as a music teacher. While Czukay initially had little interest in rock & roll, he was piqued by the Beatles’ I Am the Walrus, which led him to interest in the Velvet Underground, Frank Zappa and Jimi Hendrix, among others. In Can, Czukay helped marry these ostensibly disparate influences into a singular style. Czukay released his last solo album, Eleven Years Innerspace, in 2015. In This Article: Can, Obituary. Eleven Years Innerspace from Holger Czukay (2015) (2x 10'').
